On this day 150 years ago, the seven ironclads of the City class were declared complete and were accepted for service from their builder, James B. Eads. These seven ironclads: Cairo, Carondelet, Cincinnati, Louisville, Mound City, Pittsburg, and St. Louis (later renamed Baron De Kalb), along with two that had been created by converting existing boats: Essex and Benton, meant that the Union now had nine ironclads poised above the heart of the Confederacy like a dagger.
CAIRO, January 15, 1862.
We do hereby certify that the work on the seven gunboats, built by Mr. James B. Eads, the contractor, has been completed according to the terms of the contract with the Government, excepting the time at which they ought to have been finished and delivered at Cairo.
A.M. PENNOCK,

R.N. STEMBEL,

Upon the above certificate I have accepted the gunboats from Mr. Eads, the contractor.
